Northern Genetics Service

The Northern Genetics Service provides a comprehensive Clinical genetics Service for the Northern Region. The main clinical base, Cytogenetics (Chromosome Analysis) Laboratory and Molecular (DNA) Laboratory are at the Institute of Human Genetics in Newcastle. There is a permanent clinical satellite unit in the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

Clinical geneticists see a diverse patient group from pregnant couples, children with dysmorphic syndromes, through to adults, for example with a family history of cancer. In addition to considering the individual referred our remit extends to the broader family. As inherited disease can affect any system we liaise with clinicians in many specialties.

We co-ordinate the National Diagnostic and Advisory Service for Rare Neuromuscular Diseases. There are strong links with the Institute of Human Genetics facilitated by the clinical service and the research Institute being located in the same building. Both the clinical service and the Institute of Human Genetics have an excellent international reputation and a good track record in providing postgraduate training for laboratory staff, research staff and clinical academics.

The main research themes in the Institute of Genetic Medicine are: cancer genetics and chromosome stability, cardiovascular genetics, complex disease and quantitative genetics, human reproductive cell biology, neuromuscular genetics, renal and complement genetics, stem cell biology and vertebrate development.
