Internal medicine encompasses diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and hepatology, infectious disease, clinical phamacology, clinical immunology and acute medicine. These clinical specialties provide high quality patient services that have won national recognition over the years, including Hospital Doctor Awards for Diabetes and Gastroenterology.
There is strong emphasis on translational research which is supported by close links with the Institute of Cellular Medicine in the Faculty of Medical Sciences and the Newcastle NHS Hospitals Foundation Trust. The research is based upon the broad themes of developing and evaluating novel treatments, including immune modulation and cell based therapies, and exploring disease pathogenesis with a particular emphasis on immune and genetic mechanisms. Clinical research is supported by state of the art facilities including the Newcastle NIHR Clinical Research Facility, Newcastle Clinical Trials Unit and the Magnetic Resonance Centre.
There are excellent opportunities for post-graduate clinical training, including Academic Clinical Training Fellowships. There is also the innovative Wellcome Trust Interdisciplinary training programme in translational research which provides invaluable training towards a career in clinical academic medicine.
