Laboratory Medicine encompasses a broad range of disciplines involved in clinical diagnosis; this includes Cellular Pathology, Clinical Biochemistry, Microbiology and Laboratory Haematology. Laboratory Medicine services in the Newcastle are of outstanding quality providing not only an efficient and effective local service but in many areas acts as a regional expert referral centre.
This all benefits from state-of-the-art laboratory and biobanking facilities and synergies between the Faculty and the Newcastle Acute Trust. Novel advances made by our clinical academics for example in understanding the molecular basis of cancer feed directly into diagnostic practice underpinning our success in translational medicine.
There are excellent opportunities for postgraduate clinical training in all specialties in Laboratory Medicine including an innovative Academic Clinical Fellowship in the Pathology of Ageing. Several senior staff contribute to national policy setting and quality assurance and some contribute to and edit major international textbooks in their discipline. Areas of particular strength include liver pathology, investigation of lymphoreticular disease, neurodegenerative diseases, lipidology and transplantation microbiology/virology.
There are strong links to the Institute of Cellular Medicine, Institute for Ageing and Health and the Northern Institute for Cancer Research.
