Medical Physics

Greenlight pressure cuffMedical Physics provides innovative solutions for clinical developments and research.It is staffed by physicists, engineers, computer scientists, audiological scientists and technologists. Amongst all graduate staff are Clinical Scientists registered with the Health Professionals Council.

Disciplines include radiotherapy physics, nuclear medicine, ultrasound physics, medical imaging, MRI, radiology, physics, radiation protection, laser physics, physiological measurement, photobiology, audiology physics, scientific computing, clinical instrumentation, rehabilitation and bioengineering. The NHS Regional Medical Physics Department provides linked services to 13 hospitals in the North East and Cumbria.

Our strongest clinical links are with Cardiology, Respiratory Medicine, Urology, Orthopaedics, Cancer Services, Radiology, Neurology, ENT and Dermatology. Our Cardiovascular Physics and Engineering Research Group has a strong international reputation and has significant research funding from EPSRC. There is an excellent training base for PhD research Students , MD medical research and visiting fellows.

Major strengths are in initiating and supporting innovative developments and translational research spanning the NHS, academia and the medical devices industry. We have won many awards for invention and innovative medical devices development, with many devices marketed internationally
