Neuroscience

Neuroscience directorate includes Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neuroradiology, and Clinical Neurophysiology which are currently based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. The different disciplines provide secondary and tertiary clinical services in the Northern of England, with out-reach clinics and close links with Neurology departments in Sunderland, Teesside and Carlisle and Paediatric Neurology in Newcastle.

In addition to the regional clinical services, several have a national and international reputation, including Cognitive Neurology, Movement Disorders, Neurogenetics, and Mitochondrial Disease. The including the national commissioning group service for rare mitochondrial diseases is also based in the directorate.   

There are excellent opportunities for postgraduate clinical training in all specialties including Academic Clinical Fellowship in the Neurology.

Major research strengths include the role of mitochondria in human disease and ageing, neurogenetics and neurodegenerative disease, with major grant awards including two Wellcome Trust Senior Fellows in Clinical Science, Wellcome Trust and Parkinson’s Disease Society programme grant support, leadership in two Medical Research Council centres, and NIHR grant awards

There are strong links to Institute for Ageing and Health the Institute of Neuroscience and the Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre in Ageing.
