Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G)

Ultrasound scanThe Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) is the major tertiary referral centre for the O&G of the North East of England with over 6500 deliveries. The unit offers tertiary services for fetal and maternal medicine, reproductive medicine, MAS and urogynaecology. The regional oncology service is based at nearby Gateshead. The RVI offers excellent clinical training opportunities in terms of all ATSMs and Subspecialty Training in Maternal & Fetal Medicine. There is also a flourishing Academic Clinical Fellowship and Lectureship programme.

There is a strong programme of basic science and health services related obstetric research led by Professor Steve Robson. The Uterine Cell Signalling Group (part of the Institute of Cellular Medicine) focuses on the cellular mechanisms of uterine contraction and trophoblast invasion/placentation. Research within the Reproductive Health Group focuses on interventions to improve pregnancy outcome. This group has strong links with the Institute of Health and Society. Professor A Murdoch leads work on human embryonic stem cells linked closely with the NE Stem Cell Institute. There is also an expanding ovarian cancer group (led by Mr R Edmondson) within the Northern Institute for Cancer Research.

Novel advances made by our clinical academics for example in understanding the pathophysiology of falls have led directly to changes in clinical practice underpinning our success in translational medicine.
