Oncology

Northern Centre for Cancer Care, courtyard beside Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research CentreThe Oncology directorate includes adult clinical and medical oncology and recently moved into a new regional cancer centre, The Northern Centre for Cancer Care, on the Freeman Hospital site.  This centre also includes the Specialist Haematology directorate facilitating collaborative clinical research between these 2 cancer disciplines.

Secondary and tertiary clinical services are provided for the North of England with out-reach clinics in the regional cancer units.  Clinical trials activity takes place on the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre which, together with the paediatric oncology trials team, forms the cancer platform of Newcastle Biomedicine clinical research.

The Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre carries out all phases of cancer trials, coordinates North of England Cancer Network studies and is an integral part of the Newcastle Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre.  It is an important component of the Northern Institute for Cancer Research at Newcastle University, which has a major interest in the development of new anti-cancer drugs.

There are excellent opportunities for postgraduate clinical training, with PhD and clinical fellowship training programs established in the Northern Institute for Cancer Research Major research strengths include Early Phase clinical trials, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic trial endpoints, breast, ovarian and prostate cancer, with a cross tumour site translational interest in DNA repair.  Programmatic research grants are held from Cancer Research UK and Department of Health.
