Ophthalmology comprises the investigation, diagnosis and management of eye and visual disorders. The clinical department in Newcastle is one of the largest in the country and offers a full range of subspecialty services. Comprehensive facilities are available for ophthalmic electrodiagnosis and eye movement recording, and facilities for eye tracking and pupillometry are available in the visual perception laboratory on the Campus for Ageing. Research areas include stem cell therapy (corneal and retinal), epiretinal prostheses, mitochondrial disorders, dysthyroid orbitopathy, visual aspects of neurodegenerative disease, and strabismus and amblyopia in children.
Members of the department contribute to national policy making through the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and the Department of Health, and sit on the editorial boards of national and international journals. There are strong links to the Institutes of Neuroscience, Ageing, and Health and Society. Clinical and academic training opportunities are available.
