Primary Care

Primary Care encompasses the delivery of healthcare through NHS General Practices and Community Services. Academic general practitioners work in practices in Newcastle and Northumberland.

Whilst primary care research is carried out several of the universities Institutes, the base for research in primary care is within the Institute of Health and Society.  The main primary care research programmes focus on the two areas of:

  • improving the effectiveness of healthcare delivery (hosting a Cochrane Collaboration Programme); and
  • ageing

The latter is conducted with close links to the Institute for Ageing and Health.

There are training opportunities for registrars on the Northern Deanery Vocational Training Schemes in the form of a 12 month innovative post in research training.
