Public Health

Public health is "The science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through organised efforts of society." (Sir Donald Acheson) and public health is a multidisciplinary specialty pursuing this goal.

Multidisciplinary public health research is carried out across several of the universities in the North East; in Newcastle the base for public health research is within the Institute of Health and Society, including leadership for the Centre for Translational Research in Public Health, a newly established national centre of excellence funded by UK Clinical Research Council, and a number of research programmes.

The Institute of Health and Society makes a significant contribution to Newcastle University's mission of Transforming Health through the conduct of internationally recognised research on population health, health services and health-related social science.
