The treatment of disease by removing, repairing or replacing parts of the body – surgery, has a long and continuing history of successful development and innovation. Surgeons continue to seek to use new technologies and evidence of effectiveness to maximise benefit and minimise the trauma of operations for individual patients.
Modern surgery is divided into a number of specialties aligned to organ systems or to particular patient groups but tend to have a common set of skills. Surgeons contribute to research by leading research programmes linked to their clinical interest, by developing and evaluating new technology and by testing new or modified treatments in clinical trials. This frequently leads to greater understanding of disease process, advances in treatment and improvement in the evidence base of surgical practice.
The hospitals in Newcastle upon Tyne and in neighbouring towns and cities provide all aspects of surgical care and active research programmes within Newcastle University are associated with each surgical sub-specialties giving a wide scope for the involvement of interested clinicians in research activity.
