Wellcome Trust Fellowships

Newcastle University has received funding from the Wellcome Trust to appoint to four prestigious Fellowships per year for a period of four years commencing in 2009. The posts provide exciting opportunities for talented, clinically qualified individuals training in Internal Medicine specialities, Neurosciences, Paediatrics and Human Genetics.

The Fellows will typically register for a Masters level degree MRes in Translational Medicine and Therapeutics in the first year of the programme, moving on, subject to satisfactory progression, to a PhD in year two. The Newcastle clinical fellowship programme prides itself on the level and quality of supervision and mentorship provided. The Fellows will join dedicated teams of clinician scientists and basic scientists working in key areas of human disease focusing on, in particular, the translation of science into improvements in treatment.

A unique strength of both the masters and PhD programmes is the involvement of leading international pharmaceutical companies in the development and delivery of both teaching and training. The programmes will be trainee-centred and can be adapted to the interests and experience of the appointees. There will be significant opportunity to spend research time in the laboratories of our industrial partners; opportunities which will provide unique insights into translational research in practice.

In the past couple of years the following areas have been highlighted: Dermatology, Diabetes & Metabolic Disease, Genetic Neuromuscular Disease, Hepatology, Neurosciences, Respiratory Disease and Rheumatology, however the programme is open to applications from clinicians wishing to develop an interest in any area of translational therapeutics.
