Barbour Foundation Studentships

The Barbour Foundation has provided £1M (one million pounds) to support the next generation of scientists to train in areas of research excellence, including ageing, human genetics and neurodegenerative disease.  

The Foundation is funding two Barbour Fellows each year, alongside seven PhD studentships and two bursaries per year for medical students wishing to undertake research training as part of their medical degree.  Of the seven studentships, six have already been awarded in the following areas:

• Institute for Cell and Molecular Biosciences
  Recruitment of Condensin to replication origins in Bacillus subtilis
• Institute for Cell and Molecular Biosciences
  Understanding carbohydrate uptake by members of the human gut microbiota
• Institute for Ageing and Health/ Institute for Cell and Molecular Biosciences
  Understanding critical factors and pathogenic defects underlying mitochondrial gene expression
• Institute for Ageing and Health/ Institute for Cell and Molecular Biosciences
  Determining the nature, mechanisms and potential therapies for the neurological deficits in patients with mitochondrial DN disease
• Institute of Genetic Medicine
  Identifying the role of mitochondrial DNA genotype in common complex human diseases
• Institute of Genetic Medicine
  Congenital myasthenic syndromes – developing a personalised medicine approach
