Health minister Lord Ara Darzi and chief executive of the NHS, David Nicholson were in Newcastle yesterday to announce the appointment of the new Lead clinician NHS North East, Professor John Burn.
This new role has been created by the North East Strategic Health Authority to drive forward their regional vision for the next ten years as laid out in the Our vision, our future report.
Lord Darzi said: “The vision document the North East Strategic Health Authority has produced shows tremendous ambition to achieve excellence in healthcare throughout the region. Today’s visit is a fantastic opportunity to see how this ambition can be transformed into innovative services that make a real difference to patients.”
Born and bred in the North East, Professor John Burn is medical director and head of the Institute of Human Genetics at Newcastle University, and also works as a consultant clinical geneticist for the NHS. His research focuses on hereditary conditions, in particular cancer, heart defects and a brain disorder discovered by his team which involves iron deposits in the brain.
