International Students

The Faculty of Medical Sciences welcomes international students. We can offer you a first class education and provide you with a variety of choice in both taught and research-based postgraduate programmes.

Overseas Research Students Awards

The Faculty of Medical Sciences has available a small number of Overseas Research Student Awards (ORS or ORSAS) for outstanding international students, who have applied to commence PhD or combined MRes/PhD research studies in 2012. These awards (value approximately £9000 per annum) cover the difference between fees for home/EU students and international students. For further information is available on the Medical Faculty Graduate School website.

The University also has available an additional small number of ORS awards. Further information is available on the funding and finance website.

Learning English

International study at Newcastle

International students are required to provide evidence of their ability in English when they apply, since a good command of the language is essential to study for a degree. On arrival in Newcastle, you will be offered an initial English Language Proficiency test with INTO Newcastle.  The result of this will allow INTO Newcastle to advise you of any FREE English language support courses that you should consider attending.  These in-sessional English language courses are FREE to registered students and will provide you with additional support to ensure your English proficiency is of a level to ensure your studies in Newcastle are fully enabled.

The kind of English you will need is very different from the general English you may have learned in your home country. During your university studies in Britain you will need English for Academic Purposes (EAP). This is the kind of English you need to be able to listen to and understand lectures delivered by British lecturers, speaking at normal speed, to make and take notes, to research and read literature in your specialist subject, and to write essays, reports and dissertations in your chosen subject.
