Standards of information and service that learners can expect are set out in the UK Government’s Charter for Higher Education.
The following charter is specifically for our web-based distance learners and sets out what you can expect from us, what we expect from you, and what you should do if things go wrong.
We are committed to providing quality standards in education and service and if you have an enquiry, you can expect it to be dealt with within 3 working days of receipt. If the enquiry is more complex, you will receive an acknowledgement together with an indication of who your query has been passed to and an approximate timeframe of turnaround.

What you can expect from us while you are studying
As a learner, you can expect us to:
- Provide high quality web-based learning materials developed for distance learners, written by experts
- Provide high quality web-based support materials
- Allow access to relevant semester module materials on the day the semester commences
- Provide tutorial support via email
- Assess and record your work fairly and objectively
- Subject your work to internal and external moderation
- Provide a provisional report within 1 month of the submission date
- Provide library support
- Provide, upon request, information on support services which are available
- Provide, upon request, information on our academic rules and regulations, including our disciplinary and appeals procedure
- Adhere to the University’s policies on equal opportunities and sexual harassment
- Adhere to the University’s Health and Safety procedure
- Respond, with your permission, to queries from your employer/sponsor
- Provide, if necessary, proof of your studies with the University
- Provide guidelines for mentors.
What we expect from you
When you are a learner with us, we expect you to observe our regulations, get the most out of the programme, and to:
- Put aside adequate and sufficient time for studying
- Provide us with personal and work contact details
- Let us know of any changes in your personal circumstances
- Read and respond to requests from your tutors
- Keep your email account open and available
- Identify and submit work on time
- Respect module leaders by following guidelines about contacting them and submitting work
- Pay for your programme on time
- Study the learning and support materials
- Do all the activities and be proactive
- Participate in study and discussion groups, ask questions, debate issues and help others
- Reflect on readings after the activities
- Share best practice
- Consult your student handbook, which will contain the answers to most of your questions
- Let us know of any problems immediately
- Participate in evaluation
- Make use of support services
- Take part in all events which are part of your programme
- Adhere to our policy on equal opportunities and code of practice on harassment
- Act with reasonable care for your own and others’ safety when undertaking University activities
- Advise us immediately if you decide to withdraw from the programme
- Let us know of any disability or disadvantage that might affect your studies, and for which we may be able to make provision.
Dissatisfactions
We try hard to meet our high quality standards, but if you are dissatisfied, do let us know. Things can usually be put right with an email to your module leader.
If you are not happy with the findings and the reasons why your complaint has been rejected, you may submit a further written complaint to the Degree Programme Director, then the Postgraduate Sub-Dean if necessary.
