Research

The Faculty of Medical Sciences fosters leading edge research by supporting our world renowned research leaders and attracting new doctoral students working in our institutes and centres.

Research Institutes around the broad themes of Ageing, Cell and Molecular Biosciences and Health and Society are complemented by those that focus on Cancer, Neurosciences, Chronic diseases (in Cellular Medicine) and Genetics. We are recognized as a leading centre for ageing research.

We also host nationally recognised Research Centres supported by funders including MRC, National Institute for Health Research, Wellcome Trust, BBSRC, Arthritis Research UK and Cancer Research UK.

Our strategy is to support strong basic science that translates to clinical research for the benefit of patients, by encouraging collaborative working between scientists and clinicians across disciplines and specialties. A key example of this is the NIHR Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre in Ageing and Chronic Disease.

Important links to local clinical specialties are maintained through specialty based research groups (e.g. Diabetes, Liver, Musculoskeletal) and we have access to a large number of stable and well characterised patient cohorts that support translational research. We have developed close links with local NHS Trusts to ensure that our work is translated into new treatments for patients.

Newcastle Biomedicine is home to a number of specialist facilities and equipment to support research together with a clinical trials unit. The Newcastle Joint Research Office (NJRO) exists to support the joint development, implementation and successful delivery of world class research.
