We undertake a number of important activities that extend beyond the research and development community.
For our healthcare technology we engage with patient groups both in communicating the benefits of our development programme, and in defining the application areas and usability. High profile conferences, such as the 2008 N8 Supporting Healthy Ageing through Technology Conference have established a forum for networking between universities, industry, care services and older people.
We also undertake a number of activities for raising public awareness of biomedical engineering, including public lectures, exhibitions and schools visits. A Royal Society Partnership Grant has facilitated public engagement of development in cardiovascular engineering activities.
Controversial issues, such as those concerning regenerative tissue engineering, are explored by Policy, Ethics and Life Sciences Research Centre (PEALS) which aims to research, inform and improve policy, professional practice and public participation in the life sciences.
