Ageing and Type 2 Diabetes

This theme aims to investigate:

  • Diabetes researchThe role of mitochondrial dysfunction in the age related decline in pancreatic beta cell function;
  • The mechanisms of increased cardiovascular risk disease in ageing and type 2 diabetes and approaches to treatment; and
  • The role of increased daily activity in prevention and management of type 2 diabetes in elderly patients from different ethnic backgrounds. 

We interact closely with the dementia and neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular and mitochondrial themes and will benefit greatly from the Newcastle Diabetes Group coordinating and managing the North East and Cumbria diabetes local research network which is part of the Department of Health UK Diabetes Clinical Research Network
