Stroke and Cardiovascular Ageing

Cardiology patientThis theme aims to:

  • Determine the utility of plasma biomarkers of acute brain injury in improving early diagnosis of acute stroke;
  • Determine the impact of intensity of blood pressure lowering in older people on brain structure, haemodynamics and function;
  • Investigate the prevalence and specific drug causes of ventricular repolarisation abnormalities in older patients receiving psychoactive drug treatment;
  • Determine the prevalence and consequences of diastolic dysfunction in older people and to identify novel biomarkers and Magnetic Resonance features predictors of its development;
  • Investigate the role of autonomic dysfunction and cardiovascular instability in the pathogenesis of falls, syncope cognitive decline and fatigue in older people; and
  • Identify factors that affect older patients’ response to anticoagulation therapy so that more can benefit from thromboembolic stroke prophylaxis.

We have close collaborations with the dementia theme.
