The NIHR Newcastle Biomedical Research Unit in
Lewy Body Dementia (BRU) is a partnership between The Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Newcastle University, specialising in Dementia caused by Lewy Body disease (LBD).
Our research includes people with Parkinson’s disease who then develop Dementia as well as Dementia with Lewy Bodies. Newcastle is recognised as a world-leading centre into these complex and disabling conditions which affect 160,000 people in the UK. Through the involvement of highly experienced clinicians and scientists the Newcastle BRU aims to improve our understanding of key disease symptoms and develop improved means of diagnosis, monitoring and treatment that will result in significant advances in patient management.
The BRU will support high quality programmes of work in world class research facilities, based on a campus dedicated to translational research in older people. Our research will utilise state-of-the-art MR imaging and PET techniques to develop and validate biomarkers for early and accurate diagnosis and inform new therapeutic targets. Through the BRU our clinical research in Lewy Body Dementia is supported by a well-established Atypical Parkinson’s Clinical Service through our new CRESTA clinical facility and Clinical Ageing Research Unit providing access to facilities including the gait laboratory ideally suited to EM studies.
Clinical studies underpinned by research specialties contribute to translating advances in biomedical sciences to clinical research for the benefit of patients with LBD through the discovery and validation of biomarkers for early diagnosis, predicting disease progressing and monitoring response to treatment.
