Bio-imaging Unit

Bio-Imaging is a service facility that has been set up to meet the Confocal and Photo-Microscopy imaging and analysis requirements of the Medical School and of the other Schools and Institutes. We are located on the 2nd Floor of the William Leech Building.

For further information and prices please telephone ext. 6813 or email Dr T A Booth

The bio-imaging facility offers the following specialist services:

Confocal Microscopy

Leica TCS SP2UVLeica TCS SP2UV, recently upgraded to allow multiphoton imaging. This instrument allows 3 channel imaging (including UV for DAPI/nuclei visulisation etc). Data can be quantified, present as 3D images, AVI movies or straight forward image projections.

Perkin Elmer Ultra View

Perkin Elmer Ultra ViewThis instrument is ideal for live cell imaging as it uses a spinning disk system to record images at up to 20 fps. Data can be analysed with volocity software, presented as images or movies

Atto Pathway

Atto PathwayThis high content system also has spinning disk-based imaging and an environmentally controlled chamber, allowing automated screening of cell lines (cultured in 96 well plates for example) against drugs or substances of interest.

Data aquired from this system can be analysed with the built in Attovision software and later exported to Excel.

Photo Microscopy

This system comprises Leica DMR/IRB upright and inverted microscopes, enabling:

Photomicroscopy

  • Fluorescent
  • Phase-contrast
  • Brightfield
  • On both slides and culture dishes
  • Image analysis using QWIN or Volocity

Leica Cryostat

  • For sectioning frozen fresh material

Photomicroscopy

Microtomes

  • For sectioning paraffin wax embedded material

Immunohistochemistry

For visualisation of specific antigens using flourescent dyes of enzyme markers

  • (Peroxidase or Alkaline Phosphatase)

All of these services and pieces of equipment are offered as self-service or service, with bench space available in the lab for immunohistochemistry etc.
