The North East Centre for Age Related Eye Research (NE CARE) is a multidisciplinary research group on visual problems in the elderly population. It brings together scientists and clinicians from the Universities of Durham and Newcastle and promotes translational research and facilitate multidisciplinary collaborations.
Our vision is:
NECARE promotes a) the development of an interdisciplinary research clinic for the assessment of visual failure in the elderly; b) the development of techniques for the assessment of cognition in the elderly; c) the expansion of stem cell regenerative therapies for eye disease and e) the collection of post mortem and surgically obtained ocular tissue for research purposes.
Work done in Newcastle within the last 5 years has demonstrated the major roles of metalloproteinase enzymes in age related maculopathy and of mitochondrial dysfunction in glaucoma. Work in Durham has shown the role of different lens proteins in cataract formation and how these same proteins also have a role in systematic responses to stress and neurodegenerative disease.
The unique focus and strengths of the group will be used to attract external funding, allowing applications to the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, Medical Research Council and the Wellcome Trust and charities for studies relating to this emerging area of public health importance.
The Age Related Eye Disease Research Group is part of the Institute of Ageing and Health.
