Oral Health Research Group

The Group brings together clinical dentists and basic scientists in the School of Dental Sciences with researchers in the Institute of Health and Society, the Institute for Ageing and Health and the Institute of Cellular Medicine.

Research Achievements

  • Unique links between clinical dentists and social scientists and economists allowing us to undertake innovative studies in Health Services Research (including Quality of Life) and Health Economics particularly with regard to understanding adult oral health
  • Strong links with primary dental care, reflecting our commitment to developing clinician scientists to bridge the gap from research studies to application in dental practice. The only centre in the UK with funded national training posts for aspiring primary care academics under the ‘Walport’ scheme
  • The only WHO Collaborating Centre for nutrition and oral health in the world
  • World-leaders in application of enamel microanatomy to studies of human evolution
  • Laboratory-based research (e.g. on periodontal immunobiology, streptococcal genetics, fluoride, biomaterials and hominid evolution); clinical trials (toothbrushes, sedation, analgesia); and population studies (health economics, patient satisfaction, clinical decision-making) all have strong publication records and involve extensive collaboration within Newcastle and beyond.
  • Recognised centre for fluoride research. Recent demonstration of a lack of difference in the bioavailability of artificial vs. natural fluoride, addressing a key research need identified by the MRC to inform national fluoridation policy
  • New sedation procedures incorporated into national guidelines that relieve pressure on hospitals and allow child patients to avoid potentially risky general anaesthetics
  • Improved, evidence based, management of sufferers from Temporomandibular joint disorders by finding better ways of measuring the condition
  • New insights and application of research on the relationship between quality of life and economic factors in a number of areas of patient treatment including implants, shortened dental arch and overdentures
  • Seven members of the group are holders of Distinguished Scientist Awards from the International Association for Dental Research

Research Strategy

Our strategy as a group is to combine the skills and experience of researchers from a range of disciplines to address the challenges facing clinical dentistry.  We also aim to exploit the oral cavity and its diseases for the excellent model systems that it provides for studying biological problems of wide relevance and novel approaches to healthcare management. We aim to improve research income and encourage publication in high quality international journals by pursuing our strategy in four main areas:

  • Molecular and Cell Biology of Oral Diseases
  • Dental Tissues and Materials
  • Nutrition & Oral Health
  • Effectiveness of Oral Care

Further information about these areas of research can be found at the School of Dental Sciences
