Clinical Postgraduate Training

In the UK, clinical postgraduate medical training is not normally undertaken as a university-based or degree course. Instead, training is provided in-service during employment in placements at National Health Service hospitals.

These placements are appointed competitively. All are advertised in international publications such as the British Medical Journal. Doctors considering undertaking part of their training in the UK should apply to appropriate advertisements.

However, current opportunities are available for a highly innovative scheme of Wellcome Trust Clinical Fellowships in Translational Medicine and Therapeutics.

In addition, the University has a strong educational partnership with the Strategic Health Authority and Acute Trusts which has developed an Academic Foundation Programme, Academic Clinical Fellowships and Clinical Lectureships for those wishing to pursue a clinical academic career. Information and links to individual Trusts are available on the NHS North East website.

Doctors interested in clinical training in the UK should look at the overseas doctors section on the Northern Deanery website.
