Aims

To enable students to:
1) appreciate the nature of the strategic leadership role and the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to perform effectively in the role
2) reflect on their learning and experience to improve their performance
3) appreciate the nature of the strategic leadership role and the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to perform effectively in the role
4) understand and appropriately use political leadership knowledge and skills within the healthcare setting

Outline Of Syllabus

1)       Strategic leadership – theories, principles and practice to include vision, mission and business objectives, the affects of structure and environment, changing psychological contract and expectations in the healthcare, setting and maintaining direction and standards of performance. Theories of leadership within healthcare. The importance of resilient leaders.
2)       Leading and sustaining change in healthcare organisations – external and internal pressures for change, factors that shape these pressures, tools and techniques to manage and assess organisation change. Human factors related to organisation change.
3)       Political leadership – understanding theory and appropriate use of organisation political policy, influencing others, communicating with impact.

Teaching Rationale And Relationship

This module contains equal amounts of didactic teaching and interative group work. The teaching will focus on exploring and reflecting on own organisation strategic leadership style and opportunity to create and sustain change in their own organisation. Teaching will take the form of lectures, group work and group based presentations.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship

The purpose of the written essay is to enable the student to demonstrate learning regarding strategic leadership theory and assessment of organisation change and furthermore demonstrate its application within the healthcare provider setting. The formative assessment will allow students using a peer group activity to explore and apply theories and techniques. Academic and peer feedback will be provided.
