These 3-year programmes comprise both academic and workplace elements.
The academic element leads to a Master of Science degree and is delivered through structured residential teaching blocks combined with distance learning - delivered by a consortium of four specialist organizations. The curricula covers specialist knowledge and skills, healthcare science and professional practice and research skills. Within the workplace trainees develop clinical competencies across 4 themes in Year 1 and then specialise in years 2 and 3.
Workplace training is monitored by the National School through the use of on-line assessment tools and there is a structured assessment of clinical competency at the end of the programme.
Modernising Scientific Careers (MSC) is the Department of Health’s vision for ensuring a flexible and sustainable healthcare science workforce through modern career pathways. The careers pathway for clinical scientists is founded on Scientist Training Programmes (STP).
The programme - comprised of 180 credits - is delivered by a cross functional team of specialists in Physiological Sciences and Medical Physics. On completion, you are awarded a Master of Science degree from Newcastle University. The programmes are fully accredited by the Medical Education England Healthcare Science Programme Board.
