Date/Time: Wednesday 10 May 2017, 16:00-18:00
Venue: Room 4.23, Newcastle University Business School
Speaker: Dr Chris Land, Reader in Work and Organisation, School of Business, University Leicester
Dr Chris Land's paper, and this subsequent seminar, reports on qualitative interviews with women in the craft brewing industry.
Calling forth pre-industrial ideas of unalienated, artisanal production, the emergence of craft beer as a distinctive product category has also changed the social relations in production, particularly around gender.
The argument here is that ‘craft’ is not so much a return-to, as a break-with, tradition, generating new opportunities for women to enter an industrial, male dominated industry, merging progress with tradition, and change with nostalgia.
