Interpretive tipping points and inter-organisational patterns: Strategic timing practices in the reinsurance industry

Date/Time: Wednesday 8 February 2017, 16:00-18:00

Venue: Room 4.23, Newcastle University Business School

Speaker: Dr Rebecca Bednarek, Lecturer in Management, Birkbeck, University of London

Dr Rebecca Bednarek's paper and seminar addresses the drive in strategy-as-practice literature to address and explain larger scale phenomena and strategising processes. It does so through drawing on the interpretation literature and the notion of distributed cognition to explore inter-organisational dynamics of winning business in the global reinsurance market.

Findings show how this process unfolds through strategic timing practices of delaying, readying, rushing and settling as actors interpret the information released by others and release their own. This enacts tipping points within the inter-organisational environment which moves from anticipatory, individualised to coalesced action, enabling the crystallization of a particular pattern which constitutes inter-organisational dynamics during any particular trading period.
