Sector: Healthcare

In 2006, the Department of Health published a strategy document, Best Research for Best Health. The mission expressed in this strategy is "to create a health research system in which the NHS supports outstanding individuals, working in world-class facilities."
In addition to the identified need among clinical staff, The Royal College of Nursing has identified a need to promote excellence in research methodology amongst its members in order to facilitate capacity building.
Newcastle University Developed a new qualification for the Department of Health, to equip students with all the skills identified by their strategy document. As it is aimed at people already working in healthcare roles, the programme is offered on a part-time basis to suit day-release study and fit working patterns with limited study leave entitlement.
Students may enrol for the full 60 credit Certificate programme or for individual modules (20 credits each). For more course information see Newcastle Biomedicine. It is delivered by a combination of academic and current NHS staff.
Julia Newton, academic lead for the course, sees Newcastle as the perfect place for this kind of learning. "Not many places could deliver this material in this way," she says. "The partnership between the NHS Trust and the University is a major strength and developments like this make it even stronger."
