Identifying development needsNewcastle held an event for regional dentists in 2007 to discuss their learning and development needs to be and how they thought these would best be served.
The participants said that their development needs were more around new technically and technologically advanced treatments such as implantology, cosmetics and endodontology.
In response to the learning needs and criteria identified, the university developed a post graduate level ‘Dental Implant Course’. It was designed and delivered by Dr Francis Nohl, a consultant and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in restorative dentistry. The first cohort started running in 2008 and was delivered over 40 days with one day’s attendance at the University approximately every two weeks and is broken into two modules.
Each dentist and their team follow cases through from initial diagnosis through treatment to review as part of the module.
The initial courses provided feedback which was overwhelmingly positive. The next course is fully booked; the only change that the University is making is to give the second cohort the option of enrolling on a Post Graduate Certificate in Clinical Implant Dentistry, which students can be awarded in addition to verifiable CPD credits.
