High magnification image of mosquito compound eyeThe Advanced Chemical and Materials Analysis Service provides a range of analytical techniques at competitive prices to members of the University and to industry.

Experienced staff will test your samples and can provide feedback / reports on the results.

Services Offered

We provide a range of spectroscopic and elemental analysis:

  • inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES)
  • fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)
  • structural mass spectrometry (MS)
  • carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen combustion analysis (CHN)

Micro silicon cog on a needleThe unit also has a range of scanning electron microscopes providing a variety of imaging modes such as:

  • secondary electron imaging (SE)
  • backscattered imaging (BSE)
  • cathodoluminescence (CL)
  • electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD)
  • energy dispersive analysis by X-rays (EDX)
  • environmental and low vacuum modes (ESEM and LV)

X-ray powder diffraction analysis:

  • structural analysis of crystalline solids as powders or films (XRD)
  • high temperature stage for phase change analysis

The services have been running for over 30 years and have performed work for many local industries including Rolls Royce, Proctor & Gamble, BAE Systems and Sanofi.
