Affymetrix Facility

Affymetrix FacilityExpression profiling is an important technology for the identification of novel genetic pathways involved in development and disease.

Services Offered

The Affymetrix-based platform housed at the Institute of Genetic Medicine provides a service for genomewide expression analyses of human RNA samples but also for a wide range of model organisms, including yeast, zebrafish, rat and mouse. For low RNA quantities the Agilent Bioanalyser, a microfluidics-based platform is available to assess RNA quality. Linear amplification is routinely carried out to enable robust gene expression profiling using 25-50ng of total RNA as starting material.

A recent upgrading enabled the facility to run high-density expression arrays for the detection of alternatively spliced transcripts, and mapping arrays to perform linkage analysis, association, and copy number studies.

The Affymetrix Microarray Facility provides techniques that enable large-scale analyses of the whole genome. It is available to researchers in the University, in other academic institutions and to industry. The Affymetrix Microarray is a platform to monitor genome-wide expression profiles and to carry out genotyping for a variety of different model organisms. A full list of available chips is listed at www.affymetrix.com

The microarray equipment was initially purchased under the SRIF initiative in 2002 and was upgraded in 2007 and 2010 to allow hybridisation of the whole range of Affymetrix microarrays.
