The Dental Clinical Research Facility (CRF) is a dedicated clinical
research environment within the Newcastle School of Dental
Sciences and Dental Hospital for conducting high quality clinical
dental research.
Good oral health is fundamental to good general
health. Oral health research is therefore essential
for improving health and wellbeing, and the Dental
CRF has been developed to accommodate all
strands of clinical dental research, including
quantitative and qualitative research, clinical trials
and translational research. The Dental CRF is the
clinical research environment for the Centre for Oral
Health Research at Newcastle University and is
supported by the full infrastructure of the University
and its Research Institutes.
The unit comprises 4 fully equipped dental surgeries in which all types of dental procedures can be undertaken. Two of the surgeries are equipped with operating microscopes for advanced surgical and restorative procedures.
A full range of clinical dental research can be undertaken, including restorative dentistry, endodontics, periodontics, implant research, dental materials research, paediatric dentistry, local anaesthetic studies, fluoride therapy, nutritional research, and surgical procedures.
The Dental CRF is supported by three fully equipped research laboratories including a dental materials research laboratory, a fluoride research laboratory, and an oral biology laboratory (immunology, cell biology and microbiology research). Clinical samples obtained from patients in the Dental CRF can be transported directly to these research laboratories which are all located in the School of Dental Sciences.
This facility and associated laboratories offer full processing and storage facilities for therapeutic materials and biological samples.
Portfolio research studies and clinical trials are prioritised, but also support for small scale, pump priming research. The CRF is staffed by appropriate research support staff, specifically dental nurses and dental hygienists and a research manager.
The Dental CRF is the perfect location for conducting translational clinical dental research and industry sponsored clinical trials.
