Gear Technology CentreThe Mechanical Power Transmission Design Unit has well equipped mechanical and electronics laboratories and workshops for the manufacture of test rigs and bespoke instrumentation.

Services Offered

The Design Unit runs five state-of-the-art laboratories:

  • gear noise and vibration laboratory with 8 MW back-to-back test facility
  • gearbox test laboratory for parallel axis and worm gearboxes
  • gear fatigue test laboratory with 10 back-to-back rigs of 75mm, 91.5mm and 160 mm centres and up to 2.8 MW power
  • metallurgical and materials laboratories including facilities for X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, glow discharge surface analysis spectrometry
  • national gear metrology laboratory - the UK national standards laboratory for gear metrology

The Design Unit is engaged in fundamental research in:

  • pitting, micro-pitting and scuffing
  • gear, chain and belt stress analysis
  • fatigue strength enhancement by shot peening, surface treatments and coatings
  • drive system dynamic modelling and analysis
  • gear noise and vibration analysis and optimisation
  • gear grinding
  • gear metrology
