Nafferton Farm

Nafferton FarmThe University's Nafferton Farm is on the north side of the Tyne Valley. It is used for research, teaching and demonstration purposes. Nafferton is currently undergoing a 50 per cent conversion to organic, producing an organic versus conventional system for research.

Nafferton is a 294 hectares farm situated 12 miles west of Newcastle on the north side of the Tyne Valley. The soil is a well drained medium loam and the rainfall for the area is around 630mm. The University rents the farm from the Allendale Estate on a full repairing lease. The farming system is based on milk, beef, cereals and oilseed production.

A major new factor influencing the farming policy at Nafferton is the establishment of the Nafferton Ecological Farming Group at Newcastle University. The centre undertakes research on organic management of crops and animals at Nafferton at plot, field and whole-farm levels.

Nafferton Farm has been split and the eastern half of the farm converted to an organic farming system. The first organic crops were harvested in 2003. The herd was split in summer 2004 and the whole farm split was completed by harvest 2005.
