Postgraduates for Business: Subsidised Expertise for your Company

The Postgraduates for Business scheme forms part of the Newcastle Science City Business Support Programme Support project; it is an ERDF funded initiative allowing your business to review and resolve issues which may have been affecting the company’s performance using the subsidised resources of a Newcastle University student.  A postgraduate student from one of the programmes detailed below is placed within your organisation, for a period of up to 24 weeks (900 hours) to carry out an in-depth project to help improve your business.  The student retains the support of the University through guidance and supervision from a Newcastle University academic who is highly skilled and experienced in the project area throughout the duration of the placement.

ERDF Funding

The student receives a salary of £250 a week for up to 24 weeks (dependant on the duration of the project), 50% of which is subsidised by the University.  Therefore you will receive up to £3000 in salary subsidy.  In addition, you may also benefit from a grant of up to £500 towards expenses associated with the placement such as protective clothing etc

Which Companies are eligible for the ERDF funded salary subsidy?

All North East based SMEs working in a business to business working environment who have not benefitted from over €200,000 in grants/state aid over the previous 2 years can apply.

The project operates in key innovation and technology led sectors of the North East economy specifically:

  • Energy and environment and the transition to a low carbon economy
  • Process technologies
  • Healthcare and health science
  • The digital, creative and design sectors

The long term aim of the project is to create permanent roles for highly skilled postgraduates in these sectors thus addressing the reluctance or inability of SMEs to recruit highly skilled masters and doctoral students.
