Sir Paul Nurse FRS

Paul Nurse graduated from Birmingham University in 1970 and received his PhD in cell biology and biochemistry from the UEA in 1973. He did postdoctoral work at universities in Bern, Switzerland, Edinburgh, and Sussex, and in 1984 joined the Imperial Cancer Research Fund (ICRF) in London. In 1988 he moved to the University of Oxford as Chair of its Department of Microbiology, and 5 years later he returned to ICRF as Director of Research. He became Director General in 1996 and in 2002 was appointed Chief Executive of Cancer Research UK, formed when ICRF merged with the Cancer Research Campaign. In 2003 he moved to the USA as President of the Rockefeller University in New York.

 

Paul has received innumerable accolades and awards for his research on cell shape and division. These include Fellowship of the Royal Society and Foreign associate of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. In 1999 he was honoured with a knighthood for services to cancer research and cell biology. The Lasker Award of 1998, was followed three years later by the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

 

Paul moved back to the UK to begin a 5 year term as President of the Royal Society, and become Director & CEO of the UK Centre for Medical Research and Innovation (UKCMRI).
