Research Centres

Research Centres

We have several research centres that have been established to bring together academics with expertise that would traditionally be found outside the Institute.

In addition to the world-class research undertaken in the institute we have the following research centres.

Centre for Bacterial Cell Biology

The Centre for Bacterial Cell Biology (CBCB) is the world’s first major research centre with a focus on fundamental scientific questions about bacterial cells.

Wellcome Trust Centre for Mitochondrial Research

The Wellcome Trust Centre for Mitochondrial Research encompasses fundamental aspects of mitochondrial biology through to the natural history of patients with mitochondrial disease and to novel therapies to prevent transmission of the disorders. This requires expertise in clinical neurology and human fertility.

Centre for Synthetic Biology and Bioexploitation

The Centre for Synthetic Biology and Bioexploitation harnesses the rapidly growing discipline of synthetic biology with the well-established disciplines of genetic engineering and biotechnology. It integrates computational and engineering approaches to the design and construction of novel biological systems.
