Research Funding

Most of ICaMB’s laboratory space has recently been refurbished with about £9 million of SRIF, Wellcome Trust and industrial funding.

The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), Medical Research Council (MRC) and Wellcome Trust are the major sources of research funds in ICaMB. However, a significant proportion of our research income comes from other sources, including other research councils, charities, industry and the European Commission. ICaMB also has an increasing level of investment from the Regional Development Agency, One NorthEast.

A review of UK microbiology research showed that Newcastle was one of the top ten winners of BBSRC microbiology grant funding. The subsequent recruitment of Errington and associated staff should help elevate ICaMB in this ‘microbiology league’.

Since the instigation of full economic costing (fEC), ICaMB staff secured more than £8 million of new income from MRC and BBSRC with a high application success rate. The BBSRC annual report 2006-2007 shows Newcastle tenth by size of BBSRC funding to UK Universities, and ICaMB accounts for about two thirds of these awards.
