Newcastle Apprentice does it again

Newcastle University Careers Service is celebrating again after receiving an award last week from the Institute of Career Guidance (ICG).

The Careers Service received the Highly Commended award in the ‘working with students in post-19 training’ category for its Newcastle Apprentice scheme.

The project replicated the format of BBC One show, The Apprentice, with students undertaking a range of challenging tasks and competing for cash prizes. They were also given the chance to step into the boardroom for tips and feedback from top business professionals and high-profile entrepreneurs.

The scheme, which has also received recognition from the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS), proved such a success – it is set to take place again in 2010.

Nick Keeley, director of the Careers Service, collected the ICG award from the awards ceremony in Blackpool. He said, “The ‘Apprentice’ project, which was largely devised and led by one of our student interns, Sarah Grant, helped almost 250 students develop a whole range of enterprise skills last year. So we’re thrilled that the success of the project has been recognised by this national award.

'What’s more, the ICG award process is really rigorous, which makes our success even more pleasing.’
