Newcastle University Careers Service has been acknowledged for their continuous dedication to supporting international students. The Careers Service were runners-up in the AGCAS Awards for Excellence (International category), for their entry based on creating a coordinated suite of opportunities for students to gain work experience.
Responding to feedback from international students, the Careers Service introduced 3 schemes to help students secure part-time employment, degree-related work experience and graduate internships.
“Passport to Work” provides unpaid short-term work-shadowing opportunities in the hospitality, customer-service and retail sectors. It builds confidence, gives valuable experience of a UK work culture, and offers job-specific skills training, for which participants receive a certificate. Over 250 students have been in place since the scheme was founded with very positive student feedback.
For project based experience, the Careers Service formed Newcastle Work Experience (NWE). It provides opportunities for students to fit paid placements with regional SMEs around their studies.
The support for international students doesn’t stop there. The Careers Service have also re-launched the Careers International blog and developed several workshops that run throughout the academic year. This award builds on the success in recent years in the International Student Barometer survey in which the Careers Service was recently ranked 8th in the world from over 200 institutions surveyed.
