The Student Associates Scheme ended on 31 July 2011. If you are interested in gaining school-based work experience from September 2011 onwards, we recommend you consider the Career Development module or seek advice from the Careers Service.
What was the Student Associates Scheme?
The Student Associates Scheme was a national paid work experience initiative to encourage students to consider a teaching career within subject shortage areas, particularly Maths and Science. It was set up by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) and run by higher educations institutions across the country.
Between 2005 and 2011, Newcastle University supported 485 students through a 15-day school placement, many of whom have gone on to pursue a teaching career.
In May 2011, the TDA announced they will no longer be funding the Student Associates Scheme, but will offer alternative ways of gaining school work experience nationally. See www.tda.gov.uk for further details.
