What is Newcastle Work Experience (NWE)?

NWE offers paid work experience opportunities in local small and medium sized companies to bright and enterprising students. 

The term-time programme is open to all Newcastle University students from any degree discipline. You will be required to undertake a total of 100 hours work over 3 - 4 months, fully flexible around your timetable.

The summer programme is open to all current or graduating Newcastle University students from any degree discipline. You will undertake a full-time placement over a 5 or 10-week period.

Placements are available in a wide range of disciplines. Previous placements have included:

  • business plan development;
  • arts mangement;
  • market research;
  • laboratory assistant;
  • IT support;
  • website and software development;
  • engineering problem-solving

What are the benefits of taking part in NWE?

  • Receive a training bursary: earn £600 for completion of a term-time placement and £1200 or £2400 for a summer placement.
  • Enhance your employability.
  • Complement your studies and put academic theory into practice.
  • Develop Newcastle Graduate Skills, particularly: Commercial Acumen, Personal Enterprise, Planning & Organising and Communication.

When do NWE placements take place?

The exact timing of each placement will be mutually agreed between you and the host company, with most commencing within 2-3 weeks of the advertised closing date. 

  • Term-time programme

Work may be undertaken during term-time up to a maximum of 15 hours per week (or up to 20 hours per week during University holidays). 

  • Summer programme

Placements will take place between June and October each year. Exact timings will vary between placements but will be advertised in advance for your information, where possible.

Where can I find details of current advertised placements?


Visit Vacancies Online and search for available placements by selecting 'Work Experience/Paid Part-time' and checking the 'Newcastle Work Experience' search option.

Summer scheme vacancies will also be advertised under the 'Graduate vacancies only' option for the benefit of graduating students.

How do I apply for a NWE placement?

Prior to making an application, we strongly recommend that students call in to the Careers Service for a 15 minute drop-in appointment with an information officer or CV adviser to review their CV and application.

Once you have chosen the placement you would like to apply for, you should complete the appropriate online application form, ensuring you have your CV ready to upload:

Shortlisted applications will be passed to the host company for review and the most suitable applicant will be selected following interviews. 

Unsuccessful applicants are free to apply for other advertised placements.
