What is Newcastle Work Experience (NWE)?

NWE offers paid work experience opportunities in local small and medium sized companies (SMEs) to bright and enterprising students. 

The term-time programme is open to all Newcastle University students from any degree discipline. You will be required to undertake a total of 100 hours work over 3 - 4 months, fully flexible around your timetable.

The summer programme is open to all current or graduating Newcastle University students from any degree discipline. You will undertake a full-time placement over a 10-week period.

What are the benefits of taking part in NWE?

What do NWE students do?

Placements are available across a wide range of disciplines and previous projects have included:

  • business plan development;
  • arts management;
  • market research;
  • laboratory assistant;
  • IT support;
  • website and software development;
  • engineering problem-solving

When do NWE placements take place?

The exact timing is usually agreed between you and the host company, with most placements commencing within 2-3 weeks of the advertised closing date. 

  • Term-time programme

Work may be undertaken during term-time up to a maximum of 15 hours per week (or up to 20 hours per week during University holidays). 

  • Summer programme

Placements may be carried out between June and October. Placement dates will be advertised in advance for your information, where possible.

Visit Vacancies Online and search for all available placements by selecting 'Work Experience' and selecting the 'Newcastle Work Experience' search option.

You can also receive email alerts through Vacancies Online. To do this search for vacancies that interest you and select 'Email me jobs like these'.

How do I apply for a NWE placement?

Once you have chosen the placement you would like to apply for, you should complete the appropriate online application form, ensuring you have your CV ready to upload:

We strongly recommend that you call in to the Careers Service for a 15 minute drop-in appointment with an information officer or CV adviser to review your application before submitting it.

You must be eligible to work in the UK during your studies before applying for a NWE placement. Visit the UKCISA website for more information on Working in the UK during your studies.

Shortlisted applications will be passed to the host company for review and the most suitable candidate will be selected following a round of interviews. 

Unsuccessful applicants are free to apply for other advertised NWE placements.
