Newcastle Work Experience

What is Newcastle Work Experience (NWE)?

Newcastle Work Experience is a paid, flexible work experience programme providing undergraduate and postgraduate students with the opportunity to undertake challenging project-based placements within Newcastle University and North East businesses.

There are two programmes:

  • Term time – 100 hours’ work, part-time around your studies. Run from October to May and open to all current Newcastle University students from any degree discipline.
  • Summer – part or full-time placements over a 5 or 10 week period. Run from June to September and open to all current and graduating Newcastle University students from any degree discipline.

Placements are available across a wide range of disciplines including business management, marketing, IT, engineering and laboratory assistance.

During each year you can complete only one term-time and one summer placement. Unsuccessful applicants are free to apply for further advertised NWE placements.

What students say about their NWE experience:

'The placement allowed me to apply the skills I learned during my degree to a real working environment, where I could actually make a difference in an organisation that does vital work within the community. As a result, I feel more confident and have greater prospects of getting the graduate job I've been working towards.'
Alexander Teahan, Stage 3 Psychology

'Thanks to my NWE placement, I have been able to get a graduate job that I otherwise would not have had the skills or knowledge to get; I had to perform a task in the interview that I only knew how to complete because I'd learned it on placement. I am very pleased with my experience.'
Cheyenne Graves, Masters Latin American Studies

'The NWE scheme has hugely benefited me. I have not only had the chance to develop skills I picked up at university, but also develop new ones. The real world experience provided by the scheme is invaluable, and it also provides the opportunity to make business connections. Thanks to the scheme I have been offered a permanent position by the company where I did my placement.'
David Dodds, Stage 3 Politics and History
