Graduate Destinations

Each year, every university in the UK contacts all UK and EU graduates to find out what they are doing on a specific date, approximately six months after graduation. This is the Destination of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey.

The following analysis is based on the data supplied by 14 Civil Engineering BEng Honours graduates from Newcastle University who responded to our survey.

2012 Newcastle University Civil Engineering BEng Honours Graduates

HESA categories

93% went into work, study or a combination of both.

Of those in employment, 100% were in graduate-level jobs.

£23,600 was the average salary of all of the graduates who supplied us with salary details.

The classification 'other' can refer to a range of individual circumstances, for example, EU students who return to their country for national service.

Career Choices

Due to the specialised technical expertise gained at Newcastle University, some Civil Engineering BEng Honours graduates directly begin careers in civil or structural engineering. The variety within these roles is considerable: from infrastructure and ground works, to transport logistics. In engineering disciplines it is common to progress to Master's level study, in order to work towards chartered (CEng) status. As such, many specialise in their area of interest, securing places on MSc courses in civil, structural, environmental and transport engineering.

For those who choose to move outside of the engineering sector, graduates are able to apply the transferable skills they gained while undertaking project work, such as problem solving, effective communication and team work, to begin careers as army officers and recruitment consultants. As mathematics is a shortage subject in teaching, graduates have been able to capitalise on their enhanced numerical skills to secure Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) places.
