What is FLUX?

FLUX is a fast paced and fun competition which will get you solving real world problems with help from business experts and top graduate employers.

Working in a team of six, you’ll develop, plan and present a business strategy for a real challenge that will be unveiled at the briefing session. You’ll get the chance to bounce your ideas off experts in key business areas before pitching your strategy to a Dragons’ Den-style judging panel.

Why should I take part?

Split over two days, FLUX is an intense but fun activity. You'll be put under pressure, but we know you’ll find it challenging and rewarding! Taking part is a great way to improve your employability, meet our panel of graduate recruiters or even be talent-spotted. You don't need any business knowledge to take part as you'll be fully briefed at the start of the event.

After the finale, there will be an drinks reception, giving you the chance to meet employers informally.

Throughout the day there will be individual and team prizes. The individual prizes will be awarded by the business experts as part of their talent-spotting. The overall winning will win £500 and will be sponsored to represent Newcastle University at the National Final of FLUX in Lancaster in spring 2014.

“The experience I gained from FLUX has proved vital in job applications and interviews and I expect it will do for years to come. I urge anyone, no matter what course you are studying, to take one day out of your busy schedules and enter yourself in to FLUX. Who knows where it will take you.”
Lee, Sociology graduate

What happens on the day?

Working in your team you will develop your business plan. You'll have meetings with business experts who can answer questions on your plan and provide advice on moving your business ideas forward. This stage is assessed but the business experts are on your side!

After your business meetings, the experts will want to see how you have used their advice to further develop your ideas. The best teams will then be selected to pitch their business idea to the experts who will test their ideas and assess their ability to persuade them to 'buy in' to their idea.
