The Careers Service’s first ever ‘Rise Up FLUX’ in May 2013 was a great success, with over 50 students and 20 business experts getting involved.
The theme was ‘Innovation means collaboration’; working in teams, students were asked to find original solutions for improving collaboration between the University and communities in the North East.
The students developed and pitched their business strategies to address this social challenge. Business experts and graduate recruiters worked with the teams, providing advice and expertise before judging the pitches. Three winning teams made it through to the grand final, where they pitched their ideas to a panel of business ‘dragons’ in front of a live audience.

Why take part in FLUX?
Taking part is a great way to improve your employability and demonstrate your skills to the expert judges. It’s also a lot of fun!
One of the judges, Daisy Ford, a Newcastle University graduate now working as a Senior Associate at Deloitte Newcastle, commented:
“I wanted to help out with this event because it seemed like a really interesting idea to test the skills of the students. Trying to solve problems from the real world means that this was an authentic experience for those who took part and they will have learned some valuable lessons which they can take forward when they start their careers.”
Marc Lintern, Director of Newcastle University Careers Service, developed the Rise Up Flux idea. He said:
“It was a great chance for our students to impress recruiters from some of the top companies in the North East and the UK, to really put themselves forward to get a great start in their careers. And it was a lot of fun!”
