Fairtrade

The Fairtrade logo

Newcastle University was first recognised by the Fairtrade Foundation as a Fairtrade University in 2006.

Our Fairtrade status is one of the ways in which the University demonstrates its commitment to development in the Third World and to sustainability.

What Fairtrade is

Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in developing countries.  The FAIRTRADE mark guarantees a price that covers the cost of production, a social premium for producer groups to invest in business or community development, long-term trading relationships and advanced payments.

Fairtrade protects the livelihood of small scale producers from the developing world.  It offers protection for their income against the financial pressures of international trade by guaranteeing them a fair price for their products.

How we support Fairtrade

  • Both the University and the Union Society have a Fairtrade Policy
  • Fairtrade foods are available for sale in all campus shops.  Fairtrade products are used in all catering outlets on campus
  • Fairtrade products are served at all meetings hosted by the University and the Union Society and in all University and Union Society management offices
  • The University is committed to campaigning for increased consumption of Fairtrade products
  • Our Fairtrade Steering Group meets regularly to discuss how we can promote Fairtrade
  • We are members of Newcastle Fairtrade Partnership, who recently produced a leaflet detailing Newcastle’s Fairtrade history (PDF :247Kb)
  • During Fairtrade Fortnight (PDF : 190Kb) all of the University's residential and catering outlets will participate in a number of free activities (PDF : 304Kb)
