Scientist in molecular biology facility

The Centre of Bacterial Cell Biology has extensive, world-class facilities allowing a broad range of research to be explored from nanotechnology to whole cell function.

Specialist facilities include:

  • 2 Super-resolution applications forfluorescence microscopy -nSIMand nSTORM
  • TIRFand SIM-TIRF microscopy
  • 2 systems for 4-D Real timefluorescence imaging with focal locking systems(the Delta vision and a Nikon system)
  • an ultra low light detection system using EMCCD technology.
  • 3 systems for high speed multi colour imaging using epi-fluorescence.
  • 2 colour spinning diskconfocal microscope.
  • a high resolution FRAP system
  • flow cytometry with cell sorting
  • x-ray crystallography (Mosquito nanodrop crystallisation robot, 20 degree temperature controlled room with microscopes for crystal growth, rotating anode Rigaku MicroMax 007 x-ray generator with Raxis IV++ detector)
  • state-of-the-art microbiology containment level 3 suite

Other equipment includes:

  • circular dichroism fluorescence spectroscopy with polarisation anisotropy
  • electron paramagnetic spectroscopy with helium cryostat
  • stop-flow UV-VIS and fluorescence spectroscopy
  • inductibly-coupled plasma mass spectroscopy
  • applied photophysics stopped-flow spectrometer
  • atomic absorption spectrophotometry via flame or furnace
  • isothermal titration and differential scanning calorimetry
  • Malvern Zetasizer dynamic light scattering instrument
  • planar lipid bilayer rig
  • anaerobic chambers dedicated to handling metalloproteins including an inbuilt microscope for generating anaerobic crystals and analytical ultracentrifugation facilities

Scientists also have access to facilities within the Institute for Cell and Molecular Biosciences (such as proteomics and biological mass spectrometry equipment and bioinformatics support) and Faculty of Medical Sciences (such as electron microscopy suite and bio-imaging unit).

Scientists within the Centre for Bacterial Cell Biology are based in newly-refurbished laboratories within the Faculty of Medical Sciences and in the new, purpose built Baddiley-Clark Building.
