Study With Us

Research Masters Courses

We offer two Research Masters degrees:

Both courses offer a one-year masters training in behavioural research, specialising in animal and human research respectively. Students gain in-depth knowledge and research skills from leading researchers, and conduct their own 24-week research project, possibly with one of our academic or industrial partners in the UK or in Europe. Students receive extensive hands-on research experience, which will prepare them for a PhD, or perhaps research-related positions in academia or elsewhere. To find out more about the degree, why not read more about what some of our previous MRes students have said.

PhD Training

PhD students in the CBE work on a wide range of exciting and often interdisciplinary projects in a range of species from mantids to humans. Our aim is to ensure a high quality of individual training for our PhD students in a supportive and stimulating environment that promotes academic aspiration and achievement in our young scientists. Why study with us at Newcastle?

  • The MRes offers a 24-week research project in an area of your choice, allowing you to really develop your research and scientific communication skills that will prepare you for a PhD.
  • The MRes gives you in-depth knowledge in animal behaviour, but also in related areas of biology – an interdisciplinary approach is increasingly important in the study of behaviour.
  • All postgraduate students (MRes and PhD) will be very much a part of the active research environment of our Centre.
  • You will have access to excellent facilities in one of the largest behaviour groups in the UK.
  • We have weekly research meetings, where you will be able to discuss ideas and research with other students and CBE members, and present some of your own findings.

Funding

Top applicants to either of our Research Masters courses can apply for one of the £1000 CBE MRes Scholarships when applying for admission.

We regularly advertise funded PhD studentships (see the News section, or check on FindAPhD.com). We also welcome enquiries and applications from prospective self-finding PhD students from around the world. Please contact individual members of staff directly about possible positions in their lab or opportunities for self-funded students.
